The drive to evolve.
Rising passenger demand and operating pressures in commercial aviation, growing mission requirements and technology complexity in defense, and the pursuit of greater efficiency and performance in power generation are each driving the need for more efficient, powerful, and sustainable systems. Engine manufacturers are challenged to reduce fuel burn, lower emissions, and improve performance across all commercial, military, and industrial applications. At the center of this challenge is the turbine airfoil—a precision-cast component that extracts energy from high-temperature, high-pressure gases to drive the engine. Improving airfoil efficiency and cooling performance are the critical levers to advance next-generation solutions for propulsion and power generation.
Airfoil performance: a critical lever.
Airfoil performance directly drives engine performance through both aerodynamic design and the ability to reliably withstand the engine operating environment. Fuel efficiency, operating efficiency, and power output all improve with increasing engine operating temperatures—but only to the extent that turbine airfoils can endure the extreme conditions. Aeroengine airfoil blade components must operate at rotational speeds between 10,000 and 30,000 RPM and withstand temperatures that continuously exceed their melting point.
Advances in superalloys, ceramic core design, and casting technologies—such as directionally solidified (DS) and single crystal (SX) processes—have allowed for continued advancement of engine designs and performance. However, with progress comes manufacturing complexity. Producing these components consistently at scale now requires the most advanced processes, equipment, and engineering expertise in the casting industry.
